Introduction
HEAS Pty Ltd, formally RF Peters and Associates, are well recognised as trainers and presenters. Roger Peters wrote and can present all of the following programs. As a presenter, Roger is sought after throughout Australia and has taught the following programs on countless occasions. In the case of Alcohol and Other Drugs, over 200 presentations have been delivered. Care of the Self, we estimate has been presented well over 100 times. Of course, testimonials and validations are available on request.
While the following courses are “off the shelf”, HEAS stress the importance of completing a needs analysis before embarking on any training, thus, ensuring you maximise your training opportunity and of course, your budget.

Counselling Skills
Aim:
A two day course aimed to teach participants some basic counselling skills for use in the workplace for dealing with staff experiencing difficulties due to work- and/or non work-related issues.
Objectives:
By the end of this session participants will be better able to:
- Describe the difference between coaching and counselling
- Outline various work situations where counselling an employee may be appropriate
- Summarise the benefits of counselling in the workplace
- Describe why we might avoid counselling an employee
- Perform 3 fundamental counselling skills: namely, Attending, Listening, & Paraphrasing
- Learn some strategies for effectively dealing with a highly distressed employee
- Recognise when and where to refer an employee for professional assistance
Substance Use and Abuse
Aim:
1) For employees: This two hour course is aimed to teach employee's about the effects of alcohol and other drugs. The course focuses on performance at work, and is an ideal educational program for workplaces who are developing, or have introduced an Alcohol and Other Drugs policy.
2) For supervisors and managers: This two hour short course is designed to provide managers and supervisors with just some of the facts about substance use and abuse and how to recognise and deal with their effects in the workplace.
Objectives:
By attending this program, participants will be better able to:
- Describe the physiological effects of substance abuse
- Explain the potential effects of substance abuse on work performance
- Recognise the signs of substance abuse in the workplace
- Effectively deal with problems of substance abuse in the workplace
Super Advising
A course for managers and supervisors on effectively dealing with staff experiencing difficulties
Aim:
This one day workshop is aimed to teach participants some basic counselling skills for use in the workplace for dealing with staff experiencing difficulties due to work- and/or non work- related issues.
Objectives:
By the end of this program participants will be better able to:
- Describe how change can impact upon well-being and performance
- Outline three major areas of psychological distress in the workplace and some ways to deal with these
- Recognise the signs of staff who may not be coping
- Outline the reasons why an employee's performance might decline
- Describe the difference between coaching and counselling
- Summarise the benefits of counselling in the workplace
- Describe why we might avoid counselling an employee
- Perform some appropriate counselling skills with a focus on active listening
- Identify when disciplinary action may be appropriate
- Recognise circumstances where the need for conflict resolution may exist
- Recognise when and where to refer an employee for professional assistance
Super Advising II
Aim:
This one day workshop is aimed to teach participants some basic counselling skills for use in the workplace for dealing with staff experiencing difficulties due to work- and/or non work- related issues (Superadvising 1 is a pre-requisite).
Objectives:
By the end of this program participants will be better able to:
- Describe various work situations where counselling may be appropriate
- Describe the benefits of counselling in the workplace
- Describe why managers might avoid counselling
- Perform appropriate counselling skills, particularly active listening
- Recognise when disciplinary action may be appropriate
Managing Employee Well Being
Aim:
This half day course is aimed to provide participants with the knowledge to identify staff who may not be coping with the stress of workplace change and to recognise when and where to refer an employee for personal assistance.
Objectives:
By the end of this program participants will be better able to:
- Understand the impact of change upon well-being and performance
- Identify areas of psychological distress in the workplace
- Maintain their own health and well-being
- Recognise the symptoms of not coping
- Assist staff who may not be coping
- Recognise when and where to refer an employee for professional assistance
Leadership
Aim:
This one day course is aimed for the soon to be promoted, or newly appointed leader. it is specifically aimed to assist participants identify their style, develop a flexibility in approach (situational) and identify strengths and weaknessES in their own particular style.
Objectives:
- To better understand the concept of leadership
- How leadership is developed
- Why the myths of leadership are wrong
- Identify their own leadership by way of self analysis
Team Building
Aim:
This is a three day program, but each day stands independently. thus, parts of one day can be added to any other, to make any number of days. Aimed to develop a stronger team, characterised by empathy, loyalty and commitment. A team with shared goals, mission standards, and vision.
Objectives:
- Participants will better understand group cohesion, in group and outgroup behaviour, stereotyping, prejudice AND discrimination
- Participants will develop a shared mission and standard
- Participants will conduct a team analysis and identify strengths and weaknessES
- Participants will develop strategies for improving strengths and dealing with weaknesses
Dealing with Difficult People
Aim:
A one day program aimed to assert participants to better control the difficult behaviour of people, including staff, clients, customers, students, and even relatives.
Objectives:
Participants will better understand:
- difficult behaviour and difficult people
- factors which influence how well we handle difficult behaviour
- strategies for managing difficult behaviour
- managing difficult behaviour over the phone
Stress Awareness I, II, III
Stress Awareness I Aim:
A two hour course aimed at teaching people the basis of the stress response and discusses physiological measures for controlling it.
Stress Awareness II Aim:
A two hour course aimed to teach what the current levels of work related stress is. To then teach people how to develop better coping resources.
Stress Awareness III Aim:
A two hour course aimed to teach people how to deal with conflict.
Objectives for Stress I - III:
To help participants better understand:
- What stress means
- The physical mechanisms of stress
- Physical controls
- Coping resources
- Sources of conflict
- Strategies of resolving conflict
- Develop better coping resources
- Managing others with stress
Care of the Self
Aim:
A two hour course aimed so that participants will develop a better understanding of themselves, in particular, why and how distress occurs. How to care rather than fix it, and how to come to terms and manage when trauma strikes.
Objective:
- To understand the difference between stress and strain
- Motivation
- Conflict
- Coping resources
- Grief and trauma
- Dealing with anxiety, depression, anger and guilt
Other Programs
Dealing with Trauma in the Workplace and Peer Support Training Programs, are two workshops conducted by Dr Roger Peters, who is consultant to the NSW Police Department, The Department of Corrective Services, The Department of School Education and the Department of Defence, on matters relating to Critical Incident Stress Management.

Fee Structure
Most courses are based on $1650 per day in the Newcastle area, half day courses are $990 (plus travel for destinations greater than 100kms ). Outside the region it would be more cost effective in the case of shorter courses, to put two courses together at no extra cost, courses in Sydney are $TBA per day irrespective of the course chosen.
